К участию в конкурсе допускаются картины, выпущенные в период с 1 октября 2005 года до 30 сентября 2006 года в стране, выдвигающей их на соискание "Оскара". Еще одно обязательное условие - как минимум недельный прокат фильма-номинанта в коммерческом кинотеатре.

Письменные заявки должны быть получены академией не позже 2 октября, а копии фильмов - не позже 13 октября. От каждой страны принимается не более одной заявки.

"Оскара" за лучший иностранный фильм прошлого года получили в Голливуде создатели картины "Цоци" из ЮАР. А первой такой награды в 1956 году был удостоен фильм Федерико Феллини "Дорога". С тех пор в борьбе за престижную награду успели поучаствовать 102 страны.
